This Stranded Deep tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.
Builds Rankings
| Tier | Build | Rating | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Island Hopper | 9.5/10 | Explore islands systematically, harvest everything valuable, move on when depleted. |
| A | Base Builder | 8.5/10 | Establish a central base, build all crafting stations, then venture out for specific resources. |
| A | Hunter | 8.5/10 | Hunt fish, sharks, and boar for food and materials. Dive shipwrecks for salvage. |
| B | Raft Designer | 7.5/10 | Build an elaborate mobile base raft, live at sea, visit islands only for resources. |
| C | Speedrunner | 7.0/10 | Beeline for boss islands, skip base building, fight bosses with minimum preparation. |
Detailed Builds Analysis
Island Hopper (S-Tier)
The optimal playstyle — build a seaworthy raft early and systematically visit every island, harvesting key resources and marking completed islands. Carry a Smoker on your raft for portable food preservation. This approach prevents resource starvation on a single island.
Best with: Multi-hull raft with sail, Smoker, Water Still, Compass, Watch — see our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Navigation tools, portable food/water
Base Builder (A-Tier)
Focus on building a main base on a central island with all crafting stations, then make supply runs to nearby islands. A well-stocked base with farms, water stills, and storage makes the mid-game comfortable. Less efficient than island hopping but more secure.
Best with: Water Still, Farm Plot, Shelter, Campfire, Storage crates — see our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Building materials, farm sustainability
Hunter (A-Tier)
Prioritizes crafting the Speargun and Refined Spear early for underwater hunting. Fish and crab provide reliable food, and shark hunting yields valuable leather and teeth. The Hunter can sustain food supply indefinitely through ocean hunting.
Best with: Speargun, Refined Spear, Diving Mask, Fin Flippers, Smoker — see our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Weapon crafting, underwater gear
Raft Designer (B-Tier)
Focuses on building the ultimate raft with multiple floors, crop plots, water stills, and crafting stations — essentially a mobile base. While fun and creative, this approach takes significant resources for marginal practical benefit over a simpler exploration raft.
Best with: Large raft base, onboard crop plots, multiple sails, motor — see our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Buoyancy modules, building materials, motor fuel
Speedrunner (C-Tier)
Rush boss kills to escape as fast as possible. Requires game knowledge — knowing where to find specific items in shipwrecks and optimal boss strategies. Not recommended for new players as mistakes are punishing with limited resources.
Best with: Refined weapons ASAP, minimal shelter, stockpiled healing items — see our builds guide for full setup. Stat focus: Boss preparation items, weapon materials
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Refined Spear | All builds — the most versatile weapon for both land and underwater combat | Upgraded from the Crude Spear using a Refined Knife at the Crafting Station. |
| Crude Bow | Hunter build for safe ranged damage on land | Crafted from a stick and lashing, the Crude Bow fires stone or bone arrows at moderate damage. |
| Refined Axe | Island Hopper and Base Builder for efficient resource gathering | The upgraded axe cuts trees in 3 hits instead of 8 and deals decent melee damage. |
| Refined Knife | All builds — doubles animal resource yield | Essential for skinning animals (double resources vs. |
| Speargun | Hunter build and boss fight preparation — best underwater weapon in the game | Found in shipwrecks (not craftable), the Speargun is the strongest ranged weapon for underwater combat. |

Equipment Analysis
Refined Spear: Upgraded from the Crude Spear using a Refined Knife at the Crafting Station. Deals solid damage to both land and sea creatures. Can be thrown for ranged damage but risks losing it if it sinks in deep water. Your primary weapon for most of the game.
Crude Bow: Crafted from a stick and lashing, the Crude Bow fires stone or bone arrows at moderate damage. It's the safest weapon for land combat since you can kite boars and crabs. Arrow crafting requires additional resources, so conserve shots. Essential for boss preparation.
Refined Axe: The upgraded axe cuts trees in 3 hits instead of 8 and deals decent melee damage. Since trees are finite, using the Refined Axe saves enormous time and preserves your Crude Axes for when you can't find materials. Also the best tool for destroying structures to reclaim materials.
Refined Knife: Essential for skinning animals (double resources vs. other tools) and as a crafting ingredient for other refined tools. The Skinning Knife effect is crucial — a Refined Knife on a boar gives 2 leather instead of 1, and 3 meat instead of 2. Craft this before anything else.
Speargun: Found in shipwrecks (not craftable), the Speargun is the strongest ranged weapon for underwater combat. It fires spear-type projectiles that deal massive damage to sharks and boss creatures. Ammunition is craftable but requires metal salvage. Essential for boss fights.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Stranded Deep centers on raft building and island resources. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Island Hopper with Refined Spear is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- boss creatures builds are gaining ground as players find new synergies.
- Hunter remains essential for learning hard content — see the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Base Builder is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Refined Axe offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Speedrunner builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
